Beano Comic Book Furniture

Beano over Dandy any day!
Bored with plain furniture? Don't panic, decoupage is back.
Final Product
Why not cover a child's table in pictures from their favourite magazine, decorate a bookcase in pages from (an old copy) of your favourite books, or go even crazier and cover a door in ordnance survey maps! Too far? Ok I'll calm down..

I decided to use an old blanket box and cover it in cut outs from best childhood comic ever.. The Beano (Princesses were boring, I wanted to be Minnie the Minx). When researching what type of adhesive and sealants I would need I came across a product called Mod Podge, apparently it's quite popular in the US but not so much here in the UK. I found a cheap retailer of Mod Podge on eBay and decided to get it in matte as I prefer this finish. After a few days wait for it to be delivered I was ready to go.
What I used:

  • Old blanket box or you could use anything you want to decorate

  • Mod Podge, I used about 300ml

  • Paintbrush
  • Comic book, magazine, pages from a book, love letters, bank statements, you could literally uses anything!
I decided just to cover the lid of the box in the comic and paint the rest, so I used a few coats of white undercoat then topped with white gloss. I then placed the cut outs in the positions I wanted them.
I used my favourite strips from three Beano's and overlapped the images
After covering up all the wood with pictures I brushed on the first coat of Mod Podge making sure I'd covered every piece of paper in glue and left it for a few hours to dry. I then repeated this and did about 5 coats of Mod Podge, leaving to fully dry before applying the next coat. Depending on what you are making it may not need as much glue, but I was using quite a bit of the magazine, and many of my picture were overlapping.

And here it is the final product. It looks lovely in my lounge and holds all of my sewing tools and fabrics and is occasionally used as a side table.
Mod Podge is waterproof incase a glass of wine accidentally gets spilt, Phew!
